Students display talents at Open Mic Night
Issue date: 9/16/05 Section: The Edge
Duantarian Coleman was another poet in the house on Monday. He had a relatively short performance with his poem, "The Past and the Future" which was half-sung. A beautiful sounding piece, but did not seem clear on the message.
Then the first and only female performance the whole night by a solo artist named Andy Valentine. She came out with her acoustic guitar and started singing. She was phenomenal. When her voice added with her guitar, it was great. She had a strong voice in a modern alternative style sound. Her song, "This is Living" was a very original sounding piece. Andy has a CD out for $5 and is probably worth it for the three songs.
The only comedian for the night was good ol' Paul Zinotti. He was a funny guy. He talked about how horrible the cafeteria food here is, and how he got caught masturbating. He was pretty raunchy, but that's what made it so good.
The ninth performance of the night was simply called, "The Loop and Bongos" which had the guitar player and conga player from Greg and the Crew. There set seemed as though it was influenced by indie rock bands like Rusted Root, but had one reggae-feel song.
The theme of the performance was that the guitarist would play a rhythm and record it and loop it, and then play lead over it. All of a sudden we were out of performances. But, guess who came back, Pickett one last time with his raunchy and dirty poem "Sex and Poetry!" Nothing he said can be repeated in this article, but well done.
Hopefully when the next Open Mic comes around, there will be a full roster and there will be more attendance because it's a shame that more of the campus could not enjoy the talent of all these performers.
