He added Goldfarb has asked him to look into a potential university site for online response in support of Amtrak, but said there are limits to what can be done politically through such a university site.

"Certainly we will continue to inform members of the university community regarding Amtrak issues," he added.

PRWeb released an article on June 17 stating Congress has cut funding to Amtrak.

"Congress earned some taxpayer respect this week when a committee cut Amtrak's budget by more than half," the article stated out of Irvine, Calif.

The article said a House Appropriations subcommittee approved $550 million for Amtrak, not the $1.8 billion it requested.

The online edition of the Quincy Herald-Whig, at Whig.com, stated in a May 12 article that without federal funding, Amtrak would have to rely on private sources of funding for its operation.

"U.S. Senator Dick Durbin has pledged his support for Amtrak, noting there were 3 million Amtrak riders in Illinois last year. The train service also employs 2,000 people in Illinois," the article stated.

More than 30,000 riders used the rail service in and out of Macomb last year.

Amtrak began service May 1, 1971 and has provided service to over 500 communities in 46 states along 22,000 miles of rail.
