Students ham it up at Western Idol

The two were not done entertaining and sang Michael Jackson's "Beat It."
The music didn't stop with a solo effort courtesy of one of the members of KTW. He gave the crowd a soulful cool down from the last few songs performed, but the talent he exhibited was distinct. One of the judges commented how he sounded much like Luther Vandross with his full, impassioned voice.
"It looked like fun," said Andrew Wemhoener, junior geology major, of the contest. "Karaoke is always a good time."
Showing off the range in styles, one of the Western Idol organizers took it upon herself to rock out to a raucous country tune. The last performer contrasted the previous song with a heartfelt ballad. She had a nearly perfectly pitched voice, which brought the contest to an elegant end.
The judges took their time to deliberate for a few moments and first place for this year's Western Idol was awarded to the rap trio KTW. As winners they came away with a $50 gift certificate to the University Bookstore and more than likely a few new fans. If nothing else, the contest allowed Western students to cut loose and show off their talents.
