The 'Necks had five finishers in the top seven in the tournament. The Leathernecks were led by sophomore Tim Streng, who won after a playoff on the final hole of the tournament against sophomore teammate Nick Kwaterski.
"After a little bit of a struggle yesterday around the green, I had to come back," Streng said.
Streng shot a 72 in the opening round, followed by a 67 in the second round for a two-round total of 139. Kwaterski also had a two-round total of 139 as the two matched each other stroke for stroke in the first two rounds.
Streng and coach Mel Blasi both agreed that the home-course advantage was an obvious benefit for the team.
"The team spent a lot of time preparing for their home tourney," Streng said. "We all came out the day before and prepared around the greens, and we knew where the pins were going to be, so that helped us a lot."
"Being at home is always an advantage," Blasi said, "but a lot of the teams that were here will also be at the conference championship in a few weeks, so now they have a feel for (the course)."
The good fortune in weather proved to be a benefit to the 'Necks along with their home-course course advantage, which they will again have at the Mid-Continent Conference Championship in mid-April.
"I need to work on my short game a little bit, but qualifiers are on Thursday and we leave on Saturday," Streng said.
The Leathernecks have two more tournaments before the conference season. Their next challenge will be the Branson Creek SMS Invite in Branson, Mo., April 4 and 5 in which they hope to have the same success as at home.
