Alpha Sigma Tau, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Zeta, Chi Omega and Phi Sigma Sigma performed dances onstage to celebrate collecting money and toiletries for charity during the White Rose Challenge. The Challenge, hosted by Sigma Tau Gamma, is an annual event held during Philanthropy Week. All sororities were invited to compete in a variety of events throughout the week, including dodge ball, volleyball, coin wars, paddle design and toiletries collection.
According to Sean Vanderhoot, senior marketing major and White Rose chair of Sigma Tau Gamma, the White Rose Challenge has raised significant funds for the cause.
"We are going to give a record-breaking donation of over $800," Vanderhoot said.
The money goes toward Books for Kids, a philanthropy sponsored by Sigma Tau Gamma that sends books to public libraries and school districts in various cities, including Kansas City, Mo., Washington, D.C., Milwaukee and Chicago. Since its inception in 1995, the group has donated over 29,000 books and $30,000 toward books for children, according to the Sigma Tau Gamma Web site.
In 1996, Western's chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma donated the most books nationwide to the philanthropy, and they came in second in 1997. In 2003, the fraternity donated the most money nationwide toward Books for Children.
Vanderhoot said by going off the donation facts from last year, this year the fraternity might donate the largest amount of money again.
The variety show was held to celebrate the achievements throughout the week as well as to allow the sororities to share their talents.
"We tossed around ideas for a nice ending event for our ladies. When it came time to vote at chapter, we decided between listening to answers (to questions) or watching girls put on a dance for us. It was a no-brainer. Besides, (the variety show) is pretty exciting," Vanderhoot said while emceeing the event.
