After the Nov. 2 national election, Campos, senior political science and history double major and Student Tenant Union president, was tied with Larry Aurelio for the fourth position on the County Board. Both candidates had received 1,949 votes.
The two candidates had to wait two weeks for the provisional votes to be counted in order to find out who would win the position.
On Nov. 16, Campos was in the Student Tenant Union office when he heard the final counts - Aurelio received 1,953 votes while Campos had 1,952.
"I was a little frustrated, to say the least," Campos said. "My thoughts were that I would have rather lost big or won outright. I knew I would hate to have it drag out for two weeks just to find out that I lost by one vote."
However, Campos said he sees this experience as a positive one.
"Whenever you run as a candidate, you grow as a person. You gain exposure and get to meet people," Campos said. "This (experience) helped to showcase to students that they can be a force if they go out and work for it. It's not going to be handed to us. We have to go out there and work for it. It can be done."
According to Campos, he ran for the County Board seat in order to inspire students to get involved in politics.
"Students should get involved in the (political) processes of Macomb and the community," Campos said. "Students bring many aspects to the community but don't take the time to get involved in the process. Students could have a lot of say in the County Board."
Some duties of the County Board include setting a variety of budgets, including the budget for the sheriff's department, working through property-tax issues that will fund schools and setting polling places for the elections in the area. Campos said his first goal, had he been elected into the position, would have been to rearrange polling places in Macomb.
