The increase caused Western to close freshman admissions in early August. This is the first time in recent memory that Western has had to stop admitting new students prior to the beginning of the school year.
According to a University Relations press release, this is the ninth consecutive year Western's enrollment has increased, with this year's population rising from 10,996 to 11,187 on the Macomb campus.
"I think it is all about the timing,"said Jennifer Mason, admissions counselor. "I think the support from everyone on the WIU campus and the Macomb community have encouraged students to choose Western. It's really a joint effort among everyone."
Mason added Western has many different things to offer and word is getting out about the university's facilities.
"We attribute the rise in enrollment and the increasing interest in (Western) to our exceptional academic reputation, innovative Cost Guarantee program where tuition, fees, room and board remain the same for four years and to our reputation as a friendly and welcoming environment," said Western President Al Goldfarb.
While the Macomb campus has managed to increase enrollment, the Quad Cities campus decreased from 1,375 to 1,164 students this year.
Mason added that while the Quad Cities campus does seem to be struggling in enrollment, she anticipates an increase soon.
Mason said next year there will be a deadline for accepting applications for those wishing to attend Western, which has not happened in the past.
"We are strongly encouraging prospective students to apply as early as they can," Mason added.
