Letter to the Editor
Editor's note: The following letter is in response to "Keyes too conservative for Illinois," by Patrick Garner, which appeared in the August 30 issue of the WC.

Unfortunately, The Weekly Standard writer Mr. Garner is referring to is Mike Murphy - it is he who penned the article "Keyes to a Fiasco." I would hesitate to call Mike Murphy the authority on Keyes, as he reduces Keyes simply to his race, overlooking his core values and the fact that he has a huge following among conservative voters. Voters do not vote for Keyes because of his race.
They vote for him because of his values. Obviously neither Mr. Garner nor Mr. Murphy understand the pro-life movement, Keyes, or the conservative Christian voters of Illinois.
You may ask, what does the pro-life movement have to do with Keyes? The pro-life movement is what Mr. Garner cleverly refers to as "adamantly opposed to women's rights." So according to Mr. Garner, denying a woman the right to chose is denying her of her rights. But isn't denying a baby the right to live denying that child of his or her basic human rights? I believe we all have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Further, Garner writes, "when he can, Keyes equates gays with Adolph Hitler, saying, 'Hitler and his supporters were Satanists and homosexuals.'" Why yes, there is astounding documentation that Hitler was perhaps homosexual. Perhaps you should read up on your German history Mr. Garner. May I recommend distinguished German historian Dr. Lothar Machtan? But to reduce the argument to this would be an injustice. Hitler was not an atheist, nor was he a conservative Christian - although limited Hitler quotations would have you swayed to either side. To quote Kevin Davids, author of an article on Hitler who has done extensive research, "When one looks at the atrocities committed under the Nazi regime of Adolf Hitler and compares them to the teacher of universal love, Jesus of Nazareth, one might come to the immediate conclusion that the notion that Hitler was a Christian is absurd." Hitler's actions in life placed him outside of the church, similarly to how an outspoken atheist would not really be an atheist if all the while she or he studied the Bible.
Mr. Garner is inaccurate in saying Hitler was a "conservative Christian" and to suggest that all conservative Christians believe as Hitler did is just ludicrous and insulting.
Mr. Garner is limiting the homosexual marriage issue so that it fits his agenda, which is blatantly anti-Christian. In reality, what Mr. Garner is looking to do with his opinion column is have you believe conservative Christians hate homosexuals and would do as Hitler did - throw them to the concentration camps. He would have you believe conservative Christians want to strip women of their rights. He would have you believe conservative Christians are extremists with "beliefs left over from a bygone era." But what Mr. Garner fails to address is why he has such a vindictive, hateful, malicious spirit toward conservative Christians.
Will this be yet another year where this newspaper is used as a tool by Mr. Garner to voice his consistently hateful views?
