Though the council said it appreciated LeFante's insights, the aldermen voted unanimously to adopt the budget as it was written. It will be in effect May 1, 2004 through April 30, 2005.
Another Macomb resident voiced his concerns over the recent increase in water, sewer and garbage rates in the city. Bill Butcher, Apollo Cleaning Center owner, asked the Council to consider giving a break in the fee increase to large-volume water users, such as coin-operated laundry facilities.
Butcher said the city should offer some incentive for owners who already go to great lengths to preserve water. Butcher said he has installed the most effective water-saving laundry machines.
"Give us a break for using the best technology available," Butcher said.
Though Butcher is not expecting the fee increase to go away, he said he hoped the council would offer some sort of incentive-driven policy to help his business cope with ever-growing water bills because coin-operated laundry facilities provide a valuable sanitation service to the residents of Macomb.
The council passed the ordinance to increase utility fees but agreed to review some of Butcher's points.
