BISHKEK‚ Kyrgyzstan - Workers at the Kyrgyzstan Medical Academy illegally sold 35 tons of dead bodies over six years to a German anatomist who flayed them and put them on display around the world‚ according to a member of the nation's parliament. Akbokon Tashtanbekov alleged that anatomist Gunther von Hagens‚ whose Body Worlds exhibit is popular in England and Germany‚ used Kyrgyz Mafia contacts to acquire the bodies.
COLUMBUS‚ Ohio - Police announced Thursday‚ Nov. 20‚ the apprehension of a man accused of sneaking up on women while he was naked and photographing their surprise. Dubbed the "naked photographer" by local media‚ the man is accused of photographing the surprised expressions of 39 women while nude.
BERLIN‚ Germany - In a gesture of appreciation to citizens who do not litter‚ the city of Berlin is installing public trash cans that say "thank you" when garbage is placed into them. The installation will begin next spring at places with heavy pedestrian traffic.
HONG KONG‚ China - An Australian crocodile hunter - hired by the city of Hong Kong to catch an elusive five-foot-long crocodile prowling the city's canals - has been unsuccessful so far in his mission. John Lever‚ who studied with crocodile cults in Papua, New Guinea‚ said this is proving to be the most difficult hunt of his career. Before calling in Lever‚ the Hong Kong police were frustrated for two weeks in their attempts to fish the animal out of the city's filthy waterways.
SAN FRANSISCO‚ Calif. - An Australian lungfish at the Steinhart Aquarium celebrated his 65th birthday at a ceremony held by aquarium staff Tuesday, Nov 18. Methusela arrived at the aquarium in 1938 already an adult. As far as captive lungfish‚ he is second in age only to Granddad‚ a fish acquired by Chicago's Shedd Aquarium in 1933.
