The Organization of Adult Students for Interaction and Support sponsored an event Tuesday night that featured Merlin Swanson, a motivational speaker.
Swanson has over 26 years of professional speaking experience and came highly recommended by more than 30 nationwide organizations. His business card says, “Life is easier than you think! — Just accept the impossible, do without the indispensable, bear the intolerable and smile at everything.”
“As the school year nears the end, the pressures of a long semester might start to show through, so we’re bringing Mr. Swanson to campus to revitalize us so we can end the semester with as much energy as we started,” said OASIS Vice President Clara Carrigan.
President Estella Novak said, “We have events the last Tuesday of each month, and this month we just wanted something to rejuvenate and motivate us before finals.”
Swanson shared many stories and jokes with the small gathering of students in order to lighten the mood and get his points across.
“I don’t want to get too heavy on you. I’m going to try to keep it light and entertaining. I don’t want you to be all stressed out with all that is going on right now; I just want you to enjoy the evening, and to glean a few thoughts about what I’m going to say,” Swanson said.
His speech, titled, “Feeling good on the inside,” focused on two main points: inspiration and how to feel better by making others feel better.
He talked about how inspiration makes people feel good, and told the group about a quote he heard the other day: “Life isn’t lost by dying; it’s lost minute by minute, day by drudgery day.”
He spoke energetically, and even illustrated his points by using things like a balloon animal.
“If you want to be a sensation, if you want to be remembered as a person who brings out the best in people, try praise and encouragement on others,” Swanson said.
He added people should separate sense from nonsense, and be good finders, not faultfinders.
OASIS is designed specifically for nontraditional students, and students with diverse backgrounds who may be continuing or returning to school. Their mission is to serve the special needs and interests of these students through student advocacy and informational and social activities. Participation is open to all students.
