Green route goes thataway

The GoWEST Transit green bus has changed its route, cutting off Lafayette Street.
Many thought the change in route was made to alleviate rider congestion at the North Quad, but according to Jude Kiah, head of GoWEST, this is not the case.
“The route the green bus now takes is not for the people of the North Quad, but for the residents that live off of Charles Street,” Kiah said.
“The red bus route was leaving too many people standing as a bus would pass them, and we needed to do something about that.”
According to Kiah, the change is still experimental, and won’t be definite until the upcoming Transit Advisory Board meeting in April.
“This is still a trial run, but as far as I can see, it is really beneficial,” he said.
“Over a thousand people live in the North Quad. If everyone in the North Quad took the bus, we would have to have 20 buses running through the North Quad a day,” said Kiah. “With all the people that get on the bus there, it was making it very difficult for the people that live outside the North Quad to get on a bus.”
“I don’t take the bus because it always comes to (Lincoln and Washington halls), and it has too many people on it. Now that there is another bus running through the North Quad, the red bus is a little more spacious and doesn’t go right past anymore,” said Allen Blaz, junior meteorology major and Lincoln Hall resident.
Adams Street resident Donny Wilhold, junior recreation, parks and tourism major, likes the new change.
“When you live off campus, it is harder to make it to class on time when you depend on the bus. The red bus would always be full with people from the North Quad, and now that there are two different buses that go through the North Quad, it is less crowded, and I can get on,” Wilhold said.
“It is also a quicker ride to class, because instead of having to go all the way around campus, it goes right in front of the halls.”
In addition to a new route for GoWEST, there will also be new buses that will be arriving next semester.
“The new buses that we are investing in will have more standing room. The back doors will be twice the size that they are now and they will be ground level with no stairs,” Kiah said. He added that larger door sizes and ground-level entrance should shorten the wait time getting on and off the bus.
“We are expecting these buses around Christmastime, and are really looking forward to brand new buses,” he said.
