Students at Western Illinois University have a new reason to go to Wal-Mart.

Although completion of the store is not expected until Aug. 13, changes are being made daily to complete Super Wal-Mart as a one-stop shopping experience.

Wal-Mart’s remodeling manifestation into Super Wal-Mart has been delayed for two full years.

According to Kristi Plum, co-manager, because the land sits on a water table, a lot of engineering development was required before furthering the expansion process.

The remodeled store will consist of a full line of groceries, including produce, dairy, meat, seafood, deli and bakery products. Super Wal-Mart will still cater to customers as it has in the past with craft, automotive and gardening sections.

“The growth of the Wal-Mart corporation is in groceries. It is needed. With the growth of our country, it is better for our customers to have a one-stop shopping experience. That is what we are going for,” Plum said.

Although the rearrangements make it difficult to find products, there has been positive feedback from Wal-Mart shoppers.

“It is complicated, but customers seem to be very excited for the future,” said Ronda Roberts, store manager.

As a company, Wal-Mart is expanding in business throughout the country.

Currently, the Macomb Wal-Mart has 250 employees. After the addition, they will double this number to 500. Already, 70 more people have been hired.

“It is bringing much more employment to Macomb,” said Charlotte Quesenberry, Wal-Mart customer.

Employees are allowed to sign up for new positions as they become available, but the changes will occur closer to the completion of Super Wal-Mart.

According to Roberts, Wal-Mart will have the lowest prices in relation to its competitors. If a product is found elsewhere at a more satisfying price, Super Wal-Mart encourages customers to bring the product in for a price match.

The new-and-improved Super Wal-Mart will continue to remain open for 24 hours, with the exception of the liquor section, which will be scheduled according to city regulations.

Many customers seem eager about the upcoming changes. Some feel it is more convenient to go to Wal-Mart and satisfy their shopping needs with one trip, as opposed to shopping at numerous stores.

“It will be more suitable for consumers to do one-stop shopping,” Quesenberry said.
