According to the exam Web site, the exam is part of a university belief that writing is an integral part of all learning and should be practiced and improved continually.

Zemke also said the exam is a tool to help the university identify students who are having difficulty, allowing them to analyze a student’s writing ability without the process of peer editing and revision.

“I think my writing is fine, and I have enough background in it, but I think the test could be a crucial thing for some people, since you’ll need writing skills after you graduate,” Eichenseer said.

The information for the test is on the Web site, along with the article required for the essay, “Death Stalks a Continent.”

“The really nice thing on the site this time is a link to last semester’s article and questions, with examples of good student essays. Students can go and see the highest scores, and know what we’re looking for,” Zemke said.

According to the exam Web site, students are recommended to spend a few hours preparing for the exam.
