Students of Thompson and Higgins halls were expecting to come back from break to a new dining hall on the first floor of Thompson, but instead they came back to a dining facility about halfway finished.
The exterior enclosure structure is now installed, making the project 50 percent complete. Contractors are now able to begin the interior projects.
The interior projects include heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, plumbing and electrical contractors attending to the interior structure of the facility.
LZT and Associates of Peoria, Ill., did the architectural design of the new dining facility. Laverdiere Construction Inc. of Macomb is the construction company assigned to the project, which has been tentatively scheduled to be completed early or mid-spring of this year.
The new dining center will cater to residents of both Thompson and Higgins halls.
Most students questioned didn't know much about the construction, just that it was expected to be finished in early January.
Some students were impatient for the completion of the dining center, but many felt it was typical that the construction was not completed when they had expected.
"I wish they would hurry up and finish," said sophomore law enforcement and justice administration major Lance Reinbolz; "I'm getting tired of eating upstairs," he added.
Other Thompson residents find it an inconvenience to hike over to Higgins to eat when Thompson dining hall is closed.
"It would be more convenient to not have to walk all the way over to Higgins to eat," said sophomore recreation, park, and tourism administration major Drew Arnold.
Some Higgins residents are less enthusiastic.
"No one that I know of is looking forward to walking all the way over to Thompson," Mike Mazur, junior history major said.
"But I hope they have a better variety of food than Higgins," he added.
