The Student Employment Office is sponsoring a student employee of the year contest. This award will be the start of the fifth annual National Student Employment Week, April 7-13.

To be considered for the award, students must have been employed full-time for a minimum of three months, or six months part-time between the dates of June 1, 2001 and May 31, 2002.

Undergraduate students employed on campus with one member of the Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrator or NSEA are eligible for the award. Along with undergraduate students, graduate students are eligible for the award if they are on the student payroll. Students who are resident assistants or graduate assistants are not eligible.

"I'm glad to see that student-workers are getting some recognition for all of the hard work they do around this campus," Mike Chumbley, junior communication major, said.

A selection committee, which was put together by the SEO, will select the winner from this campus. They will be selecting the winner by various criteria. Reliability and quality of work are two qualities that the committee will be looking at, along with initiative and professionalism. If there happens to be a tie after these qualities are assessed, the committee will look at the uniqueness of contribution for the deciding factor in the judgment.

The campus winner of the award will receive a $500 grant from the WIU financial aid office, a certificate and a congratulatory letter from MASEA.

The campus winner will go to a state competition for the awards. More prizes are given at the state awards. For example, state winners receive a check for $70.

If the winner makes it through the state awards, they have a chance to run against all the best employees in the Midwest region. The regional award is a check for $150. From there, they have the chance to run for the National Student Employee of the Year award. Last year's winner, Christina Harshman, won the campus award, the state and the regional award.

"The number of nominations varies from year to year. Last year the SEO received around 25 nominations," Eldwanda Scott, SEO employee, said.

The SEO encourages people to nominate anyone who might be deserving of this award.
