Utility tunnel/campus construction update
Utility Tunnel Phases II and III
North Campus
Crews have completed pouring the floor and wall on the shallow tunnel between Waggoner and Western halls. Pipe fitters from Gingher Process Piping are installing hangers and pipe to complete the mechanical portion of this tunnel. Waterproofing of the tunnel and backfilling are scheduled to be completed by the end of February at which time the west half of Lot 22 will be reopened to parking. Work is also in progress to enlarge the loop vault south of Western Hall.
Simpkins Hall Gym Retrofit
This project, designed by Morris and Associates of Chicago, will change the Simpkins Hall gymnasium into a 540-seat music recital space with various small support rooms. Leander Construction is the general contractor for this project. The demolition is substantially complete, with 25 percent of the remodeling complete.
Construction Unit
The project will include the refurbishing of existing seating, lighting improvements, and updating of the existing classroom to accommodate electronic teaching technology.
Thompson/Higgins - Dining
Additions
LZT and Associates of Peoria, Ill., is the architect for this project. Laverdiere Construction Inc. of Macomb is the contractor. A new dining center will be constructed adjacent to the southwest corner of Thompson Hall serving both Thompson and Higgins halls. The facility will contain a servery with several theme meal venues, a C-store with late-night operation, a 600-seat dining area with a private dining area incorporated into it, a lounge and accessible restrooms for its patrons. The project is scheduled to be completed in February 2002.
University Services Building
Remodel
Wright and Associates of Metamora, Ill., is the project designer. The project will consist of the remodeling of the recently acquired Hy-Vee building to house WIUM Radio, Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center, WIU Child Care Center and Office of Public Safety storage area.
